This website showcases the design and artwork of Richard E. Britnell from Auburn, AL. Rich Britnell has always had an affinity for old maps and geography, which is evident in the old style maps and documents that he creates. Most of his artwork is coastal in nature, including gulf coast maps, treasure maps, pirate maps and old style sea charts of the American coastline. The artwork is based on history and real facts so it takes on a rather serious or real look. Old Style Maps Much of the Geographics line of artwork focuses on, but is not limited to, the Gulf Coast region of the country. Detail charts have been drawn by Rich of Mobile Bay, Pensacola Bay and the Florida Gulf Coast, Alabama Gulf Coast, Mississippi Coast, Louisiana Coast, and the Texas Coast. However, lately Rich has begun to chart much of the east coast and is slowly making his way north. Some of his latest maps include areas of the Amelia Island area, the North Carolina Coast, South Carolina Coast and the Georgia Coast. Pirates & Treasure Although pirates are glamorized and often times made into cartoon like characters by Hollywood, they were a serious bunch that had a lot to do with the history of the New World. For example, if Jean Lafitte and his band of brethren had not assisted General Andrew Jackson in his 1815 defeat of the British in New Orleans, who knows how history would have unfolded for America. Rich’s artwork explores the history of pirates and their careers, pirate flags and the history of the Jolly Roger, shipwrecks and treasure, Spanish galleons and the treasures that they held. Lighthouses and Architecture The lighthouses and architecture along the American coastline are a valuable part of our history. Rich likes to visit lighthouses as he travels to take pictures and learn about their history. He has drawn several lighthouses including Sand Island Lighthouse, Middle Bay Lighthouse, St. Augustine Lighthouse, and Round Island Lighthouse. More are sure to come as Rich travels the coastline. Salty Water This is a section dedicated to fish and the sport of catching them. Rich enjoys fishing for inshore species like speckled trout (speck) and ocean dwellers like red snapper and tarpon. He also enjoys throwing the cast net in search of a mullet or two. All of this is reflected in his designs that feature these saltwater fish and the fishing lures and fishing flies that are used to land them. Some of the artwork is also available on T-shirts. Images of Exploration This is the catch all category where you will find artwork imagery that was inspired by things of the past. Spanish crests and flags that were flown on galleons and pirate ships are seen on much of the work in this section. In addition, you will find images of the French fleur de lis, Celtic and Irish crosses and rubbings, jewel encrusted crosses from treasure ships, Golden Section (Golden Mean Proportion) drawings, and various other shields, crests and symbols. A lot of Rich’s inspiration comes from the work of Leonardo da Vinci and imagery of the Renaissance period. Cities, States & Countries We named this section after the various shields, crests and fleur de lis that are representative of different areas around the world. You will find everything from New Orleans fleur de lis to South Carolina Palmettos to Scottish Shields in this section. Gallery Items This is the store area where we sell artifacts and artwork from our artist friends from around the country. Rich has participated in the outdoor art festival circuit for the past 14 years and has met lots of talented artists. Some of his favorites have kindly agreed to wholesale their work to him so that he can offer it in his gallery. Some of the artists featured from time to time in the gallery include potters Robin Rodgers from Tallahassee, FL and Amber Poole from Tecumsah, OK. You will also find globes, nautical ties in addition to some really cool gift items in the Geographics Gift Shop. Rich’s Metal Work On occasion, Rich will make some time for his hobby of metal work. Usually in the cooler months he will bang, grind, and weld some metal into the form a bill fish or some Christmas ornaments. Framed Prints All of the framing is done by Rich and his staff in-house. A few pieces are available on the web site on the framed prints page. We are not really in the custom framing business so we frame originals and prints in a variety of Old World looks, generally in a neutral color scheme, so that the piece can look good hanging in just about any environment. The best selection of framed pieces is available at the shows that we attend: Show Schedule. Originals On occasion, Rich will make available his original illustrations on the web site. Check here for new items as they are framed and put on the market. Geographics Gift Shop Here you will find unique gift items that fit the theme of the Geographic’s collection of artwork. This includes miniature globes, iron fleur de lis, and even silk ties with an Old World look. ![]() |
